The new ISO 14001:2026 has been published

15/04/2026

It is now well established that organizations, regardless of their size, have an environmental impact, and it is highly desirable that they manage it responsibly and transparently on a daily basis.

To support organizations in this commitment, standardization provides UNI EN ISO 14001, the second most widely used standard in the world, after UNI EN ISO 9001, which, according to the latest ISO Survey data, accounts for more than 675,000 certifications.

Following a long revision process, the new edition of the environmental management systems standard, EMS, is being published today, and will also be available in Italian starting tomorrow. UNI EN ISO 14001 makes environmental responsibility accessible and provides a practical, flexible framework for managing environmental impacts, improving regulatory compliance, increasing efficiency, and strengthening organizational credibility. In this way, environmental sustainability is integrated consistently and systematically into every organizational process.

Benefits

Adopting UNI EN ISO 14001 offers a wide range of tangible benefits for organizations, from cost reduction, thanks to greater attention to waste management and the optimization of water and energy use, to increased credibility and stakeholder trust, as well as easier access to new markets, where environmental credentials are increasingly seen as a decisive factor.

The 2026 edition

The new edition of UNI EN ISO 14001 published today features a clearer and more versatile structure and places greater emphasis on the most pressing current environmental priorities, namely climate change, biodiversity conservation, and resource efficiency.

UNI EN ISO 14001:2026 marks a further step toward more effective integration with other management system standards. It should be remembered that UNI EN ISO 14001 is one of the three most widely adopted management systems worldwide, alongside UNI EN ISO 9001 for quality and UNI EN ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and it supports their quality- and safety-related objectives.

How to apply the standard

Today, UNI EN ISO 14001 is the main regulatory instrument referenced in the CAM, the Minimum Environmental Criteria for Green Public Procurement established by the Ministry of the Environment, with the aim of reducing environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle of products and services, while promoting sustainability, circular economy principles, and energy efficiency.
